A social media ad or message leads to an investment platform with fake OSC registration — your money cannot be withdrawn
A social media ad, email, or WhatsApp/Telegram message promotes an investment platform with fake Canadian regulatory credentials. Your initial deposit grows quickly on screen. When you try to withdraw, you face tax fees, compliance charges, or the platform disappears. The OSC has deactivated 7,500+ such sites since 2025.
Also known as: fake OSC registered investment Canada, fake trading platform Canada, ramp-and-dump stock scam WhatsApp Canada, fake IIROC broker Canada, unregistered investment platform Canada, CSA fraud investment site Canada
Already happened to you? Do this in the next few minutes
- 1 Call your bank or card's fraud line right now. Use the number on the back of your card — not any number from the message or caller. Ask them to stop or reverse the payment and freeze the account.
- 2 If you paid by gift card, wire, or an app (Zelle, Venmo, Cash App): contact that company immediately and report it as fraud. Acting fast sometimes recovers the money.
- 3 Report to the FBI at ic3.gov and the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov. The sooner, the better.
What to do right now
- 1 Before investing, verify any firm's registration at https://www.aretheyregistered.ca — if it's not listed, do not send money
- 2 Do not pay any fee to unlock or withdraw funds you have already deposited — this is a second stage of the scam
- 3 Leave WhatsApp or Telegram 'investment group' channels that urge you to buy specific stocks quickly
- 4 If you have already sent money, report to the OSC at 1-877-785-1555 and file with the CAFC at https://antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca
- 5 Report to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at https://antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca or call 1-888-495-8501.
Red flags
- ⚠ The investment opportunity arrived through an unsolicited ad, email, DM, or messaging app — legitimate Canadian investment firms do not recruit this way
- ⚠ The platform claims to be registered with the OSC, IIROC, or another Canadian regulator but cannot be verified at aretheyregistered.ca
- ⚠ You are shown high account balances or impressive daily returns, but every withdrawal attempt triggers a new 'fee' — a tax payment, compliance deposit, insurance charge
- ⚠ A WhatsApp, Telegram, or Discord 'investment group' pumps a specific stock and urges you to buy immediately before the price rises further
- ⚠ The platform uses OSC logos or official-looking documents — the OSC does not contact individuals to promote investments or recover funds
Known variants
-
Ramp-and-dump: 'investment group' on WhatsApp, Discord, or Telegram promotes a penny stock with urgent buy signals. Members who joined early sell at the peak; latecomers are left with worthless shares. No withdrawal issue — the loss happens when the stock crashes.

-
AI deepfake celebrity endorsement: a social media ad shows an AI-generated video of PM Carney or another public figure endorsing a crypto platform. Victims watch a fake balance grow; withdrawal triggers 'tax' or 'compliance' fees. $900K+ losses reported. Banks refuse to reimburse authorized transfers.
