Someone calls claiming to be your relative's doctor and demands urgent UPI payment to save their life

A caller with your hospitalised relative's real ward and diagnosis details poses as their doctor, claims an emergency, and demands immediate UPI payment via a QR code for 'priority treatment'. The data was sold by corrupt hospital staff.

Also known as: fake doctor hospital QR scam, hospital insider patient data fraud, fake ward doctor UPI fraud, patient family QR payment scam, hospital staff data leak fraud

What to do right now

  1. 1 Hang up and immediately call the hospital's official reception number (found on its website or your admission paperwork) to verify the call
  2. 2 Go to the hospital in person — if there is a real emergency, your presence is required; a legitimate medical team will never ask for QR payment over the phone
  3. 3 Never scan a QR code or transfer money to any number a caller sends you without physically verifying with ward staff
  4. 4 If you already paid, immediately call your bank's fraud helpline to attempt a transaction freeze, and file a report at the hospital's administration office naming the caller
  5. 5 Alert the hospital administration that a staff member may have leaked patient data — hospitals are required to investigate data breaches under DPDP rules
  6. 6 Report at https://cybercrime.gov.in or call 1930 (national cyber helpline).

Red flags

  • The caller knows the patient's exact ward, diagnosis, and room number — this feels reassuring but is actually a red flag; real emergencies are handled in person with the family present
  • You are told the patient needs an emergency test, surgery, or medicine not covered by the scheme and payment must be done 'right now' via a QR code the caller sends to your WhatsApp
  • The call comes from an unknown mobile number, not the hospital's official landline or registered number
  • The hospital's front desk or the attending doctor's nurse, when you call back on the official number, has no knowledge of the emergency the caller described
  • You are asked NOT to go to the hospital immediately or to wait for the 'procedure to start' — real urgent procedures involve the family at the bedside, not a phone payment
