Amazon calls about a large unauthorized charge on your account

Caller claims to be Amazon fraud department about a $1,200+ unauthorized purchase. They transfer you to a fake "bank fraud team" who asks you to install remote software to "protect" your account.

Also known as: Amazon impersonation call, Amazon refund scam, fake Amazon fraud department

What to do right now

  1. 1 Hang up and call Amazon directly at 1-888-280-4331 to verify any claim
  2. 2 Never install software at a caller's request
  3. 3 Never move money to a 'safe account' — legitimate banks do not ask for this
  4. 4 Run SeraphSecure (https://www.seraphsecure.com) to detect and remove any remote-access software the scammer installed.
  5. 5 Report to the FTC at https://reportfraud.ftc.gov and the FBI's IC3 at https://www.ic3.gov.

Was remote-access software installed?

If a scammer asked you to install AnyDesk, TeamViewer, Quick Support, or any remote-access app, your device may still be compromised.

Run SeraphSecure to detect and remove it →

Red flags

  • Amazon never calls you unsolicited about suspicious orders
  • You are transferred to a 'bank representative' you did not call yourself
  • You are asked to install remote-access software (AnyDesk, Quick Support)
  • You are told to buy gift cards or move money to a 'safe account'
