Fake "military credit protection" service collects your SSN and bank info for identity theft
Scammers posing as credit bureaus or military-sounding "credit shield" firms target servicemembers at deployment or PCS transition, claiming their credit is at risk. They collect SSN and financial details for identity theft. No legitimate credit monitoring service solicits you by text or social media.

Already happened to you? Do this in the next few minutes
- 1 Call your bank or card's fraud line right now. Use the number on the back of your card — not any number from the message or caller. Ask them to stop or reverse the payment and freeze the account.
- 2 If you paid by gift card, wire, or an app (Zelle, Venmo, Cash App): contact that company immediately and report it as fraud. Acting fast sometimes recovers the money.
- 3 Report to the FBI at ic3.gov and the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov. The sooner, the better.
What to do right now
- 1 Do not share your SSN, DOB, or financial account numbers with any unsolicited caller or text sender
- 2 Active duty and National Guard members get free credit monitoring — access it at annualcreditreport.com or by calling a major credit bureau directly using a number you find independently
- 3 Place a free active duty fraud alert by contacting any one of the three bureaus (Equifax, Experian, TransUnion); it lasts 1 year and alerts creditors to verify identity before opening new accounts in your name
- 4 Report to the FTC at https://reportfraud.ftc.gov and the FBI's IC3 at https://www.ic3.gov.
Red flags
- ⚠ Unsolicited contact by text, email, or social media from a 'credit monitoring' firm — legitimate bureaus never cold-contact you
- ⚠ Company name implies military or government connection but cannot be verified on official federal or state websites
- ⚠ Caller references your deployment orders, PCS move, or recent benefit change to seem credible
- ⚠ Upfront fee or request for SSN, DOB, or bank account number before providing any service
- ⚠ Urgency: 'your credit may already be compromised due to your deployment — you must act today'
Military members qualify for free credit monitoring and free active duty fraud alerts through the major credit bureaus — no company legitimately needs to cold-call you to offer this protection. If someone contacts you out of the blue about your credit and references your deployment status or unit, hang up and access credit monitoring directly through the official bureau websites.
